Balkans

The Balkan Peninsula, or the Balkans, is a geographical region of Southeast Europe. Its geographical location combined with its political and cultural history has allowed the area to become a nucleus and a route for international organized crime. Organized crime initially flourished under Communist rule not only survived its collapse but strongly advanced during latest conflicts and many  saw their business upograded. Facilitated by corruption the region turned into a transit zone for trafficking of drugs, arms, and smuggling.

The criminal environment facilitated the creation of the Balkan Route infamous passage along which illegal goods immigrants are smuggled into Western Europe. The Balkan route known mainly as a drug trafficking route by smuggling heroin from Afghanistan  to  Western Europe has also been used in arms trafficking.

Drug trafficking has been the greatest problem for the orthorities serving the largest source of income for organized crime.

Human trafficking turned into modern day slavery (bondage and sexual slavery). Some countries are used as a passage for firearms trafficked from the East to the  European Union. In order for the Balkan Route to continue opperating as a high level  trafficking pass needs a highly organized criminal management.
